The VLR has a great number of advantages, some of which are: it can transport personnel and equipment, possesses the ability to easily turn back on the road and travel in double columns, and has the possibility of being armed with a light machine gun on a pivot. These characteristics were what the French army hoped would make the VLR an alternative to the American jeep after the end of the Second World War.
