In 1576, the humanist Antoine de Laval produced the first French-language version of Francesco Guicciardini's Ricordi. At a time when the role and functions of sovereignty were in the midst of a crisis, Antoine de Laval offered a collection of maxims for use at court in order to defend the unity and stability of the monarchy.
