No matter how populated and busy a town like New York was, I did not expect to find difficulties in search of a well-paid job that could help me to take care of my dying mother and frustrated siblings.

I was fed up listening to their pathetic complaints of hunger and ill health, explaining why I left our old family house. It sounded more of a curse to me than a responsibility to see that my family survived. However, that was certainly just the kind of curse that I hoped would transform into a blessing and bring me great joy.
