Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, tried for years to employ the most famous Condottiere in his day. But Colleoni never crossed the Alps. The Venice Republic wanted nothing but tranquillity and prevented him from going away. Documents in the National Library of Paris indicate why Colleoni liked to be a Burgundian: He hoped to become the ruler of Milan.The city, however, was ally of France against Burgundy.
