While Martin Kippenberger is widely regarded as an eminent 20th-century artist and his reputation and influence have grown since his death in 1997, this book presents the first attempt at a comprehensive art-historical examination of his oeuvre. It points us to an underlying theme in his works, the profound significance of which only becomes apparent in retrospect: Kippenberger not only recognized the constructed nature of identities early on, his ironic reflection on discourses also pointedly satirized modern and postmodern artistic positions that parroted clichés of identity.
