Jeanne Mammen: Paris - Bruxelles - Berlin

Ten art historical, cultural and literary studies essays by international experts, lavishly illustrated and including some works that have never been published, cast new light on the artistic oeuvre and the life of Jeanne Mammen (1890– 1976) and reflect the current state of this research. Cultural relationships between Germany and France are a main emphasis. An extensive biography of the artist, who helped shape the image of the “Golden Twenties” with her watercolor paintings and drawings, completes the volume. Born in Berlin, Mammen grew up in France after 1900. She began her training as a painter and graphic artist in Paris, which she later continued in Brussels and Rome. Her family had to flee from France at the outbreak of World War I; and as of 1915 Jeanne Mammen was again living in Berlin. The French cultural circle of her youth fundamentally influenced Mammen’s creative personality and her own style. Elements from the European art tradition combined specifically with what she found in Germany—merging into an impressive example of the art and cultural exchange between Germany and France.
