This volume represents the first investigation in published form of the >manualia< of Rota notaries. The Rota of the Council of Basel was established on the lines of the Roman institution. Approx. 550 legal issues brought before this tribunal have been handed down to us. The litigants appearing before the Rota hailed mainly from the German Empire (plus Italy and Burgundy), but also from France and from Spain, Poland, Scotland, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden and the Baltic States. The cases tried before the Rota were largely about benefices, with disputes on violation of rights and matrimonial cases also frequent. Purely secular matters were also referred to the Rota. The extensive record of names makes this volume an indispensable contribution to the prosopography of the Council of Basel.
