The reoccupation of the demilitarized zone in the Rhineland on 7 March 1936 has been long regarded as a turning point in the history of the interwar period. A. Wolz investigates the pre-history of the remilitarization of the Rhineland from the perspective of the German Foreign Office, where diplomats worked toward peaceful abrogation of the terms of the Pact of Locarno, only to be out-played by Hitler, who sought a spectacular military campaign.
