All Eyes on Shah Rukh! : An Intercultural Approach to the Gaze in Karan Johar's Films

Karan Johar's films are milestones in the development of a new style in Hindi cinema. Indian actor Shahrukh Khan, as their leading male star, has emerged as a trademark of contemporary Bollywood. One particular aspect of Johar's films is intrinsically tied to the transnational and cultural success of the actor, as well as the director: the gaze. With an intercultural approach, drawing on psychoanalytic conceptions of erotic gazing, as well as the Hindu concept of darshan, this book offers insights into the dynamic renegotiations of scopic relations, gender roles, as well as culturally constructed filmic codes, resulting in a hybrid style characteristic of globalization processes.
