The innovative technique of clair-obscur woodcuts revolutionized printing in the sixteenth century. From this point onwards the composition was no longer limited to purely black lines, but executed in a wide variety of colors. The artistic development of this new technique is traced through masterworks by Cranach, Burgkmair, Beccafumi and Hendrick Goltzius.
