Philips Wouwerman: 1619-1668

Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668), known as a passionate painter of horses, varied his popular main theme imaginatively in a wide range of topics. This catalog allows for a rediscovery of the Haarlem master, who's picturesque, brilliant paintings fetched higher prices during his lifetime then works by Rembrandt and Vermeer.

At his death, Wouwerman left an impressive oeuvre of some 600 paintings. From the earliest beginnings to the artist's late work, this contemporary of Frans Hals busied himself with an almost obsessive detail to the representation of horses. Because of his thematic variety and captivating natural landscapes, Wouwerman's paintings were highly prized amongst citizens, nobles, and kings during the 17th and 18th Century.

With the depiction of about 40 full-page color paintings and drawings, this volume provides a representative overview of Wouwerman's work.
