The Gottorfer Codex is considered to be a masterpiece by the Hamburg-based flower painter Hans Simon Holtzbecker, and the most magnificent florilegium of the seventeenth century. His flower portraits are a milestone on the path from a symbol-based worldview towards a depiction of the blossoming manifestations of nature that was shaped by the natural sciences.
