Despite the fact that Gabriele Rothemann's photographic work begins with reality, it resists straightforward comprehension and verbalization. Her portraits are based in large part on a visual archive of press photos, postcards, pencil sketches and watercolors; her large-scale works thematize nature and culture through photographs of dead animals, fictional animal creations and abstract pelt pictures.
