Mechanisms and Phylogeny of Mineralization in Biological Systems: Biomineralization '90

The current status of biomineralization research not only in the areas of medical and dental sciences, but also in biology, paleontology, mineralogy, oceanography, chemistry, and crystallography as presented at the 6th International Symposium on Biomineralization held in Odawara, Japan, on October 8-12, 1990, is discussed in this volume. Contributions cover such research areas as the origin and evolution of biomineralization, mechanisms of mineralization, interactions between cells, organic matrix and minerals, trace element accumulation in highly mineralized tissues, and the interaction between biomineralization and geological and oceanographical environment.
