In England at the close of the eleventh century A.D., short lifetimes necessarily forced young people to assume the responsibilities of age with the emotions of children. Thrust into adulthood, Athelstan, (Athie), became Lord of Llewellynmont at age fifteen. During an epoch of Viking raids, the Norman Conquest, and the First Crusade, his story encompasses estates on the Continent, and the colorful cities of Constantinople, Damascus, and Baghdad.
