Gender and Modernity: Perspectives from Asia and the Pacific

This volume stems in part from a workshop held in June 1999 at Kyoto U., Japan. The nine papers present studies on the impact of modernity on gender in India, Indonesia, Bali, Japan, and Australia. Individual topics include the impact of Christianity on Aboriginal women and gender roles in Australia; the impact of colonialism on women in Kerala, India; masculinity in Orissa, India; gender strategies among some rock groups in Japan; and notions of sexual harassment from modern concepts of gender roles.
