Kulte und Heiligtumer der Demeter und Kore in Ionien

This volume in the Byzas series published by German Archaeological Institute Istanbul Branch covers the cults of Demeter and Kore in Ionia and is based on the doctoral dissertation of the author. As the former studies on Demeter focussed mainly on the cult practices this work concentrates on the study of the sanctuaries, archaeological finds, epigraphic evidence and sources. First examining the architecture and finds from 14 sites in Ionia, the author derives the criteria for the identification of the sanctuaries through the Archaic to Roman Imperial periods. Then an architectural evaluation of the sanctuaries is presented. This is followed by a study of the cult, the annual agrarian cycle, and the Early Greek nobility. Demeters connection with the city is presented through eponyms and associations, followed by a study on Kore und Persephone.
