The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) (pronounced: nessie) is a survey instrument used to gauge the level of student participation at universities and colleges in Canada and the United States as it relates to learning. The results of the survey help administrators and instructors to assess their students' student engagement. The NSSE was first piloted in 1999. More than 1,400 different colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada have participated in NSSE since it was first administered in 2000. The NSSE director is Alexander McCormick.
