Square Yard

The square yard is an imperial/US customary (non-metric) unit of area, formerly used in most of the English-speaking world but now generally replaced by the square metre outside of the U.S., Canada and the U.K. It is defined as the area of a square with sides of one yard (three feet, thirty-six inches, 0.9144 metres) in length. United States customary units are a system of measurements commonly used in the United States. The U.S. customary units have roots with the imperial units, which were used in the British Empire. Many U.S. units are virtually identical to their imperial counterparts, but the U.S. customary system developed from English units in use before the imperial system was standardized in 1824, and there are several numerical differences from the imperial system.
