'don't quote me' is the story of my 50 years as a reporter on the weeekly and evening newspapers in Surrey and Hampshire. My career saw me chased from a caravan site by an armed traveller, come second best in a race with former Olympic 5000 metre runner Chris Chataway, uncover the story of John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls Royce, and attend a linch where a drunken dustman embrased the Queen.
