Religion in Movies: A Research Study on Tamilnadu State Chief Minister Dr. M. Karunanidhi's Tamil Movies

This book is based on the rich experience that he gathered as a theological graduate and priest in India and in England. This study is an attempt to formulate tools of analysis to find religions in Tamil films for the purpose of doing theology in context. For this research a selection of films of Karunanidhi have been considered as a primary source during the period 1950 to1978. By engaging in the deconstruction of films, the contents were classified, themes and narratives were interpreted, and film texts and contexts of people were evaluated. The findings are relevant to people who are interested in film studies, culture and communication from a religious perspective. The overall conclusion will show that contemporary films are nothing but popular religion, which fulfil the existential needs of the people.
