Animal Signals

Though most of the 25 articles focus on bird signals, other essays address reef fish, lizards, spiders, mice, and general topics such as fluctuating asymmetry, animal fights, and sexual signals. Notable research directions include avian ultraviolet vision, the neglected area of female ornamentation, male-to-male signalling in songbirds, and the function of lizard dewlaps. The papers were presented at the international symposium on Adaptive Significance of Signalling and Signal Design in Animal Communication in Kongsvoll, Norway, September 1998, and the 44 contributors are from an international array of universities.
