Classical Greek culture owes a great deal to the Cretan and Mycenaean civilizations which settled on the coast of the Aegean Sea in the second millennium before Christ. However, Greek history is officially born in the 8th century B.C. when the first epic writings were composed by the blind poet, Homer.
