The Suebi, Vandals, Alans, Franks, Ostrogoths and Visigoths rapidly occupied the Roman Empire's territories. Between the 5th and 8th centuries a diversity of kingdoms were established in the west of Europe, and meanwhile the Byzantine Empire began to exert its power in the eastern Mediterranean.
