Portuguese sailors followed by Spanish ones widened the boundaries of the world known to man thanks to their exploratory voyages. Initially they discovered islands like the Azores and the Canaries. Later, they reached the coasts of Africa and India and finally, in 1492, Europe made contact with America thanks to Christopher Columbus's expedition.
