The Era of Louis XIV: FRANCE I

Also known as 'The Sun King', Louis XIV was the archetypal absolutist monarch. The main characteristics of his reign were totally centralized power and supreme royal superiority over the nobility. The phrase "I am the State", in the king's own words, sums up this phenomenon which defined the structure of Europe during the Modern Age.
