Smith’s writing style employs intelligent conversation, dialogue laden with wit and hilarious observations. Topper's eponymous character is overwhelmed by the stifling mediocrity of his life, and as the plot progresses, the author manages to achieve a complete transformation of both the moral and his character. Usually, this type of transformation occurs through supernatural intervention, with the character almost always being comical. In this book, a middle-aged man receives a visit from two uneasy—and amoral—ghosts: husband and wife George and Marion. They have come to save Topper from his drab life with a whirlwind of adventures that leave him, as well as anyone that crosses his path, in both discomfort and delight.
