Looting is the main activity affecting the conservation of archaeological heritage, even over construction. This happens voluntarily and with the expectation of making private profit from public goods. Looting happens in different ways; for Spain, the main is through treasure hunters, both land (metal detectors) and underwater. This book offers an overview of looting in Spain revealing how little we know about its scope and how they affect archaeological heritage. It also analyses the social unrest provoked by the media and the legal basis and tools to fight this problem. However, this book is optimistic, from the experience in Andalucia, showing how with commitment and education it is possible to reduce the impact of archaeological looting to acceptable levels.
