The Roads of Ancient Cyprus

Bekker-Nielsen (ancient history, U. of Southern Denmark) traces the development of the Cypriot road network from its first construction in the Bronze Age through its expansion in the Roman period. Drawing on archeological, epigraphic and literary sources, he shows that road development in Cyprus is best understood not merely as a means of military domination but as a means of communication between cities and their territories and between town and countryside. He discusses travelers, life on the road, transport technology, and the legal and administrative aspects of road building. This book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
