Early Indicators Early Treatments Neuroprotection in Multiple Sclerosis

In light of evidence that irreversible brain damage accumulates very early in the course of multiple sclerosis, scientists from Europe, Israel, and the US review the main neurobiological, magnetic resonance imaging, and clinical aspects of the early phases of the disease, highlighting mechanisms of irreversible axonal damage and the role played by the interaction of glia and the axon. Their topics include inflammation, demyelination, and axonal degeneration as three aspects of the pathogenesis revealed by Campath-1H treatment; a phase I/II study with Riluzole of neuroprotective treatment in primary progressive multiple sclerosis; neuropathy and disease progression; imaging for tissue characterization in multiple sclerosis and other white matter diseases; and sunlight and vitamin D.
