Political and economical events that changed Europe and the world over the last twenty-five years could not be understood without analyzing the new role played by Germany after the fall of the Wall. The essay focuses in particular on the new generation of politicians coming from the former Democratic Republic of Germany, who managed, through personal and unorthodox paths, to hold the highest political offices of the most important country in Europe. By reconstructing public and private events involving statesmen such as Angela Merkel and Joachim Gauck, and paying attention to the human and cultural context in which they built their identity, the German political analyst Susanne Falkenberg demonstrates the crucial influence of reunited Germany on the internal and external dynamics of Europe, especially after 2008 economic crisis.
