The genus Aquilegia L. (Ranunculaceae) embraces numerous species of plants easily recognisable due to their peculiar flowers characterised by horn-shaped petals. The essay, carried on with rigorously experimental methods over decades of research both in the field and in several museums of Europe, is a taxonomic revision of the Italian and European columbines, which includes a large amount of scientific data, useful to scholars but widely accessible even to amateurs. The work is enriched by a detailed survey of the nomenclatural types, the most of which original, of the over two hundred specific and infraspecific taxa reported for the European flora.
