Bard of Prague and national poet of the Czechs, Jaroslav Seifert (1901-1986) played a fundamental role in the European literary scene of the 1900s. His verses, here together with pictures by Francesco Jappelli, bring us back to Prague in the days of yore, with streets, squares, buildings, schools, churches, and cemeteries far from the touristic circuits and almost unknown to the average visitor. "These white and black glimpses" writes Dario Massini in the introduction "almost always without human figures, without elements that could define the position in time, are the perfect counterpart to the words of Seifert. As the poet turns the real matter of his memories into artistic invention, the gaze of the photographer turns the corner of a present-day city into an abstraction that in the language of artistic fiction, brings us back in a different decade".
