Giorgio La Pira had started on the road indicated by the Council with energy and courage for his lay Christian vocation and as a responsible intellectual in political life. This horizon of the Asian awakening, and particularly China, was present in his conscience as a believer, and he “prayed with the Bible and then with the globe next to it” because it is in the history of men that the signs of the Spirit are interwoven. We are now approaching the fiftieth anniversary of the start of diplomatic relations between the Italian Republic and the People’s Republic of China, which took place in 1970: it is necessary to recover the history of those who worked on the civil and cultural plan for the consolidation of this pillar of international peace, and Giorgio La Pira was one of the main players in many initiatives in the 1950s and ’60s.
