From the Sword to the Plough

This volume incorporates the results of three pieces of research carried out in recent years which all focus on the romanisiation of distinct areas of Gaul. The first paper analyses regional differentiations in romanisations and tries to explain the reason behind them: the second discusses the results of large-scale settlement esearch, whilst the last essay is a thematic study of the Roman-style urbanisation process.Though each ahs a slightly different theoretical approach, there is a general concensus that the great regional differentiations can only be understood if a central position is assigned to the relative autonomy of native groups and individual cultures to interpret Roman cultural forms and to appropriate them from their own cultural background and social strategies.
