Desmet (1875-1956) was one of the early figures involved in the distribution and display of film in the Netherlands. Analyzing Desmet's business archives, Blom (film studies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands) argues that early film distribution played a role in the development of world cinema that has largely been overlooked. He discusses Demet's career as a window into the development of distribution and display in the Netherlands and advocates for more study of other business archives in order to understand the history of cinema culture in other countries. Distributed in the US by the U. of Chicago Press. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
