Genetic knowledge, in combination with recombinant-DNA techniques, have proved to be powerful technological instruments in many sectors of society. In many cases, the implementation of gene technology challenges established social values and attitudes. Discussions in Parliament and government committees and debates in the mass media indicate that many people are morally concerned about what is happening in this field.
The creation and introduction of transgenic animals and transgenic food products is sometimes strongly resisted by non-governmental organizations. The implementation of gene technology has in many cases proved to be a touchy issue.
