Education for a Culture of Peace in a Gender Perspective

Fostering a culture of peace through education is one of the eight pillars of the United Nations programme of action on a culture of peace. For UNESCO it is at the heart of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). This educational tool, which UNESCO is proud to present in the first year of the international decade, is to our knowledge the only manual that is based on a comprehensive, gender-sensitive approach to peace education.

This volume, designed as a resource for teacher education, is especially relevant to teaching in secondary schools, but can also be used for the preparation of elementary school teachers and facilitators of non-formal adult education. It responds to the demands of a growing number of educators who want to be part of a global movement towards a culture of peace. By providing their students with learning experiences in holistic and gender-sensitive human rights and peace education, these teachers wish to develop the skills and capacities to build and maintain a culture of peace. The volume also contains relevant suggested readings and Internet site addresses to enable educators to undertake research on more extensive peace education.
