Regional Review on Status and Trends in Aquaculture Development in Europe - 2015

Aquaculture is politically recognized as having the potential to boost growth and jobs in coastal and inland areas in Europe, with several key policies highlighting aquaculture as a key component in achieving economic growth and global competitiveness. These include the Blue Growth strategy, the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the Baltic Sea Region Strategy. Yet there are significant challenges, such as the number (over 200) of EU directives, regulations and other legislation that directly affect marine environmental policy and management, and the lack of a coherent national aquaculture policy in many countries.
