The Charcoal Transition: Greening the Charcoal Value Chain to Mitigate Climate Change and Improve Local Livelihoods

Charcoal is widely used for cooking and heating in developing countries. What are the climate change impacts of current practices in charcoal production and consumption worldwide and across regions? What is the potential of sustainable charcoal production in reducing GHG emissions and how can such potential be achieved? What are the key barriers to sustainable charcoal production and what is needed to develop a climate-smart charcoal sector? The overall objective of this publication is to enable socially and environmentally informed decision-making regarding the charcoal value chain.
