China Inside Out

In this Chinese area studies textbook, edited by Nyiri (applied anthropology, Macquarie U., Australia) and Broeidenbach (an anthropologist and journalist based in Berlin, Germany), contributors adopt a nonlinear approach to multidisciplinary questions of nationalism and transnationalism, with main chapters being supplemented by numerous side boxes interrogating the main text's premises and arguments, offering additional commentary on important concepts, or presenting different theoretical and disciplinary perspectives on important issues. Chapters treat such topics as anthropological concepts of nationalism, historical legacies of empires and nations in Asia, Chinese foreign relations, ethnicities and homelands, state and market constructions of Chinese modernity and patriotism, the role of religion and ethnicity in the construction of bilateral Sino-Burmese relations.
