Cossack Mamai: In Ukrainian Folk Paintings of the 17th to 19th Centuries

Studying the special place in Ukrainian culture occupied by the famous image of the powerful military commander, this volume takes a closer look at the painting of Cossack Mamai, the leader of the Blue Horde in the 1370s. The examination retells Mamai’s story in reproductions of paintings and a critical biography, depicting not only the subject but also offering a rich portrait of the customs of 14th century Eastern Europe under Mongol rule.
