The Red Army in Romania

Specialists in 20th-century Romania, historians Hlihor and Scurtu (U. of Bucharest) recount the occupation of the country by the Soviet Red Army in 1940-41 and from the end of World War II until 1958. They draw on archival material only recently accessible to discuss the geopolitical and historical condition that allowed the occupation, the consequences on political life and in other realms, and the establishment of a totalitarian Communist regime in Romania.
