The Copperhead, by Harold Frederic, is a fabulous novel narrated through the eyes of Abner Beech’s, very funny, 13 year-old adopted son. During the Civil War, Abner, hates abolitionist and wants the Civil War stopped: he’s a Copperhead (Northerners who thought the war could not be won and therefore thought a negotiated peace should be made with them). His neighbors don’t follow his ideas and even burn his house down. Harold Frederic was born in Utica, New York. His father was killed in a train accident when Frederic was 18 months old. He finished school at fifteen, and soon began work as a photographer. In 1875, he began work as a proofreader for daily newspapers, before going to live in England as London’s journalist (correspondent) to the “New York Times”. A job he retained for the rest of his life. The Copperhead it’s integrated in the collection “Classics of World Literature”, developed by Atlântico Press, a publisher company present in the global editorial market, since 1992.
